Why participate in this study?

Lead poses a significant threat to Michigan’s wildlife, impacting numerous species and their habitats. In response to this pressing issue, licensed rehabilitators and the Michigan Wildlife Association of Rehabilitators (MWAR) community are collaborating with the MSU Wildlife Disease Lab (WDL) to better understand and address lead poisoning cases. Currently, our data collection efforts are hindered, as many birds treated in rehabilitation that survive are not included in the reporting statistics. Additionally, lead-poisoned birds undergoing necropsy often test below the toxic threshold in their liver during postmortem examinations, complicating our understanding of the full impact of lead exposure. The Michigan Wildlife Division has recently formed a dedicated group to tackle the challenges posed by lead ammunition, and any data that accurately reflects the true impacts of lead on our wildlife is greatly appreciated. Your assistance in reporting lead cases will be invaluable in our efforts to protect Michigan’s wildlife.
